The 2000 Christmas fantasy comedy film “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, often known as Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” or simply “The Grinch”, was directed by Ron Howard and produced by Brian Grazer. It was written by Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman. This is the first Dr. Seuss novel to be turned into a full-length feature film and is based on his 1957 children’s book of the same name.
Jim Carrey plays the eponymous character in the Anthony Hopkins-narrated movie, with supporting performances by Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Bill Irwin, and Molly Shannon.
“How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, which was produced by Imagine Entertainment, was made available to American audiences by Universal Pictures on November 17, 2000. Critics gave the movie mixed reviews, praising Jim Carrey’s acting while criticizing the gloomy subject matter and spookier parts. It held the top spot for four weeks at the American box office.
Before being eclipsed in 2018 by the third movie adaption of the tale, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” earned $345 million worldwide, ranking it as the sixth-highest grossing movie of 2000 and the second highest-earning holiday film of all time behind “Home Alone” (1990). In addition to receiving nominations for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design, it also won the Academy Award for Best Makeup.

The Plot.
Every Who in Whoville enjoys Christmas a lot. The Grinch, a misanthropic green creature that dwells in a cave on neighboring Mount Crumpit, north of Whoville, is despised by the Whos because of his meanness, particularly during the holiday season.
Cindy Lou Who, who is six years old, thinks that people are more concerned with festivals and presents than they are with their close friends and family. The Grinch saves her life after getting stuck in the mail shaft when she runs into him at the post office (as he toys with the mail by rearranging everything around and sending unpleasant jury duty notices into random mailboxes). Beginning her investigation into the Grinch, Cindy learns more about his past.
When The Grinch was a newborn, two aging sisters took him in and raised him as their own. The shy Grinch was attracted to a girl in his class named Martha May Whovier while he was in school, and she felt the same way. But his classmate Augustus MayWho began tormenting him because he thought Martha preferred the Grinch to him.
He made an angel for Martha that Christmas as a gift, but because of MayWho’s assertion that he had a beard, he cut his face trying to shave. The following day, after their classmates (except for Martha) ridiculed him about his cut face, he lost his rage, said that he detested Christmas, and fled to Mount Crumpit, where he has lived ever since.
Cindy suggests the Grinch be the town’s “Holiday Cheermeister,” upsetting the newly elected mayor, MayWho. Cindy ascends Mount Crumpit to extend an invitation to the Grinch, who reluctantly agrees after understanding he might encounter Martha there and finally enrage MayWho. As Cheermeister, the Grinch takes part in a number of activities and seems to be having fun until MayWho gives him an electric razor and triggers memories of his humiliation as a youngster.
Martha is then publicly proposed to by MayWho, who also presents her with a new car and extravagant engagement jewelry. The Grinch, furious, mocks the Whos’ materialism and their view that Christmas is simply about receiving gifts that will be thrown away. He goes on a rampage, shaves MayWho’s head, destroys the tree with a homemade flamethrower (the Whos, however, have a spare), and then walks home.
Finally fed up with the Whos’ Christmas, the Grinch decides to steal all their gifts, decorations, and food while they are sleeping to break their spirit. He dresses up as Santa Claus and enters Whoville with his pet dog Max dressed as a reindeer.
He enters Cindy’s house first, and when she finds him stealing their tree, he tells a falsehood to her to help him get away. The Grinch keeps robbing the food, decorations, and gifts before loading them all into a huge sack and returning to the top of Mount Crumpit to dump the sack down the cliff and destroying everything.
The Whos discover the theft horrifyingly when they wake up on Christmas morning, and Mayor MayWho accuses Cindy of allowing the Grinch to undermine the holiday atmosphere in the community.
However, Cindy has been attempting to explain to MayWho and the others that Christmas is mostly about time spent with family and friends, not simply gifts and elaborate decorations, as her cheerful father, the village postmaster Lou Lou Who, tells them. This helps to defend Cindy. Lou is right, and the Whos start singing the Christmas carol from Whoville.
Before the Grinch can push the bag off Mount Crumpit, he hears the Whos singing and understands he has failed to stop Christmas. However, when he learns the true meaning of Christmas, his heart expands three sizes, and he breaks down in tears. Then Cindy, who had come to spend Christmas with him, and the sleigh full of gifts started to tumble off the edge of the cliff. When The Grinch gathers enough strength, they ride down the mountain to return everything and raise the laden sleigh with Cindy safely aboard.
Before turning himself in to the police, The Grinch apologizes for his tricks and the burglary. The police accept his apologies and reject MayWho’s request to have him arrested and pepper sprayed. Martha even says she loves the Grinch while turning down MayWho’s marriage proposal and returning his engagement ring to him. At the Whos’ celebration feast that follows, the repentant Grinch participates and carves the roast animal himself in his cave.

The Process To A Wonderful Grinch.
Dr. Seuss had turned down proposals to sell the film rights to his novels before his death in 1991. But after his passing, Audrey Geisel, his widow, consented to several licensing agreements for CDs, clothing lines, and accessories.
The film rights to “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” would be auctioned, Geisel’s agents wrote in a letter in July 1998. The bidders ultimately had to be prepared to pay $5 million for the material and give up 4 percent of the box office earnings, 50 percent of the merchandising revenue and music-related content, and 70 percent of the income from book tie-ins to present their proposals to Geisel.
Any actor submitted for the role of the Grinch, according to the letter, “must be of comparable stature to Jack Nicholson, Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, and Dustin Hoffman.” Furthermore, it was agreed that the estate would not take into consideration any director or writer until they had made at least $1 million on a prior film.
Nicholson was expected to portray the Grinch in the adaptation 20th Century Fox pitched, which had Tom Shadyac, Dave Phillips, and John Davis in attendance. John Hughes and the Farrelly brothers also submitted their own unique interpretations. Brian Grazer and Gary Ross were there for the pitch presentation with Universal Pictures, but Geisel turned down each offer.
The discussions were then assisted by Grazer’s producing colleague Ron Howard. Even though he was a big fan of the cartoon special at the time, Howard was working on a movie version of The Sea-Wolf, so Grazer persuaded him to go to Geisel’s house for the pitch meeting even though Howard had little interest in the Grinch.
While reading the book, Howard developed a fascination for Cindy Lou Who and proposed making a movie that would include her in a bigger role, as well as a more materialistic portrayal of the Whos and an expanded history for the Grinch.
Jim Carrey was set to star in the live-action remake of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, which Howard would direct and co-produce, according to a September 16, 1998 announcement.
Additionally, it was revealed that Universal Pictures, who had obtained the distribution rights, had given Geisel $9 million for the right to adapt The Grinch and “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” into a movie. Tim Burton was in the running to direct the film before Howard agreed to do so, but he declined because of a schedule conflict with “Sleepy Hollow”.
Between September 1999 and January 2000, the movie was in production. In October 1999, Geisel paid a visit to the set. A large portion of the Whoville set was built on the Universal Studios backlot, behind the Psycho’s Bates Motel set.
Carrey and the rest of the cast’s prosthetic makeup was designed and made by Rick Baker. It took several tests before Carrey decided to employ Baker’s original makeup concept when the actor saw a picture of Baker wearing his initial test makeup.
Yak hair was colored green, sewn onto a spandex garment, and used to make the Grinch’s costume. Up to two and a half hours were required to apply the makeup, at which point Carrey became irate and punched a hole in the wall of his trailer.
Kazu Hiro, Carrey’s makeup artist, recalled, “On set, [Carrey] was really mean to everybody and at the beginning of the production they couldn’t finish. After two weeks we only could finish three days’ worth of shooting schedule, because suddenly he would just disappear and when he came back, everything was ripped apart. We couldn’t shoot anything.”
Despite how crucial Kazu Hiro was to the production, Kazu Hiro left before Baker, Howard, and Carrey had a conversation about it. Kazu Hiro reclaimed his position after Carrey consented to control his rage.
The 8-year-old Grinch, played by Josh Ryan Evans, wore a bodysuit and the same makeup as Carrey did. Carrey practiced maintaining his calm while wearing the Grinch makeup for 92 days in total. In addition to a few dentures, ears, and wigs, the majority of the actors’ accessories were noses that attached to the upper lip.
