Super Bowl LVII – Specific Information For Fans

The National Football League (NFL) will hold Super Bowl LVII as its future American football championship game for the 2022 NFL season. The National Football Conference (NFC) champion Philadelphia Eagles and the American Football Conference (AFC) champion Kansas City Chiefs will face off in the game.

The 57th Super Bowl will take place at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on Sunday, February 12, 2023, with kickoff set for 4:30 p.m. MST (UTC-7).

The Phoenix metropolitan region has hosted four Super Bowls; the most recent was Super Bowl XLIX in 2015, which was again held at State Farm Stadium (then called the University of Phoenix Stadium). Fox will broadcast the match on national television. Rihanna will be the star of the halftime performance.

Super Bowl LVII’s Background.

Host Selection.

With Super Bowl LVI, a new mechanism for choosing Super Bowl hosting locations was put into place. The prior method of soliciting bids from cities for the hosting rights was abandoned. Instead, the league decides on a single hosting location for every game unilaterally, barring other cities from placing bids. The selected city then drafts a proposal that is decided upon at the league’s owners’ meetings.

Arizona was the first state selected through this method, and on May 23, 2018, its plan was unanimously approved.

The official logo, which incorporates images of a desert canyon and sky (the latter of which resembles the Arizona state flag to symbolize the landforms of the host location), was announced on February 14, 2022. It adheres to the modified logo template introduced by Super Bowl LVI.

The Change.

After accusing the Arizona legislature of passing unnecessary voting restrictions in Arizona bills HB 1003, SB 1485, and SB 1819, over 200 liberal religious leaders, including Jesse Jackson and William Barber, petitioned NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to move Super Bowl LVII out of Arizona in February 2022.

After the Arizona legislature passed S.B. 1138 and S.B. 1165, which limit access to gender reassignment procedures for minors and prohibit transgender girls who were assigned male at birth from participating on girls’ sports teams, vice chair of the Arizona Democratic Party Brianna Westbrook also expressed her support for moving the Super Bowl.

About Two Teams.

Kansas City Chiefs.

With victories over the Jacksonville Jaguars (Divisional Round) and Cincinnati Bengals by a single point, Kansas City finished the regular season with their 14-3 record and third Super Bowl appearance in the previous four years. This was their tenth consecutive winning season under head coach Andy Reid (AFC Championship Game).

Tyreek Hill, a talented wide receiver for the Chiefs, was traded to the Miami Dolphins in the offseason in exchange for choices, but it didn’t stop the Chiefs from finishing the season with the strongest offense in the NFL, leading the league in both yards (7,032) and points (496). Patrick Mahomes, the league’s leading passer with a career-high 5,250 passing yards, 41 touchdown passes, and 12 interceptions, was selected to the Pro Bowl for the fifth straight year.

With a 105.2 passer rating, he had the second-best mark in the league. He also gained 354 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. He amassed 5,608 total yards in a season (passing and rushing combined) to set the NFL record for a quarterback (previously held by Drew Brees). Travis Kelce, a tight end who played in the Pro Bowl, led the club in receiving yards with 1,338 and scored 12 touchdowns. To help offset the loss of Hill, the team also added two new veteran receivers: JuJu Smith-Schuster (933 yards and 3 touchdowns) and Marquez Valdes-Scantling (687 yards and 2 touchdowns).

Isiah Pacheco, a rookie, dominated the Chiefs’ rushing attack after taking over for injured starter Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the middle of the season. With 830 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns at the end of the season, Pacheco also placed 10th in the league in terms of all-purpose yards (1,559). Jerick McKinnon, an experienced running back, added 803 additional yards and 10 touchdowns.

Three members of their offensive line were chosen for the Pro Bowl: center Creed Humphrey, tackle Orlando Brown Jr., and guard Joe Thuney. Tommy Townsend, a punter who was second in the NFL for yards per punt (50.4) and led the league with a 45.4 net average, was also selected for the Pro Bowl.

Along with defensive ends, George Karlaftis (6 sacks, 7 pass deflections) and Frank Clark, Pro Bowl defensive lineman Chris Jones led the Kansas City defense with 15.5 sacks (5 sacks). With 180 total tackles, linebacker Nick Bolton was the team’s top performer. He also had two sacks and two interceptions. The secondary was led by cornerback L’Jarius Sneed (3 interceptions, 108 tackles, 3 forced fumbles, 3.5 sacks) and safety Juan Thornhill (3 interceptions, 71 tackles).

After victories in Super Bowls IV and LIV and defeats in Super Bowls I and LV, this will be Kansas City’s fifth Super Bowl. In 1962, the Chiefs also captured the American Football League title.

Philadelphia Eagles.

The Eagles advanced to the Super Bowl by easily defeating their two playoff opponents (the New York Giants in the Divisional Round and the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game) by a combined score of 69-14. The team was led by second-year head coach Nick Sirianni, who guided the team to an 8-game winning streak to start the season. The Eagles finished the season tied for an NFL-best 14-3 record. The club performed admirably on both sides of the ball, ranking third in the NFL in both scoring (477 points) and defense (344 points allowed) while sending an NFL-best 8 players to the Pro Bowl.

Jalen Hurts, a Pro Bowl quarterback, was the offensive leader. In his third season, he set new career highs in completion percentage (66%), passing yards (3,701), and passing touchdowns (22), while only committing six interceptions. This resulted in a career-high 101.5 passer rating, which was the fourth-best in the NFL. Hurts finished second in the league in rushing with 736 yards and 13 touchdowns.

A. J. Brown, a Pro Bowl receiver who was traded from the Tennessee Titans to the Philadelphia Eagles during the 2022 NFL Draft, recorded 1,496 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns, and DeVonta Smith, a second-year receiver, contributed 1,196 yards and seven more.

Tight end Dallas Goedert, who accumulated 702 yards and three touchdowns, was another dependable target. Miles Sanders, a running back in the Pro Bowl, had 1,269 yards and 11 touchdowns while averaging 4.9 yards per rush to place seventh in the NFL. Three starters from the offensive line, including guard Landon Dickerson, tackle Lane Johnson, and center Jason Kelce, were also sent by the team to the Pro Bowl. Jake Elliott, the kicker, converted 20 of 23 field goals (87%) and 5 of 6 attempts from at least 50 yards.

Philadelphia’s defense set an NFL record with four players recording at least ten sacks, finishing second in the league in the fewest yards allowed (5,125). The defensive line includes defensive tackles Fletcher Cox (7 sacks), Javon Hargrave (11 sacks), and Milton Williams (4 sacks) in addition to defensive ends Josh Sweat and Brandon Graham, who both totaled 11 sacks. Haason Reddick, a linebacker in the Pro Bowl, was second in the NFL with 16 sacks and also forced five turnovers, recovering three of them.

T. J. Edwards and Kyzir White, two linebackers, both had over 100 combined tackles and seven passes intercepted. In the secondary, All-Pro cornerbacks Darius Slay and James Bradberry each had three interceptions, while safety C. J. Gardner-Johnson shared the league leads with six.

Following a victory in Super Bowl LII and defeats in Super Bowls XV and XXXIX, this will be Philadelphia’s fourth Super Bowl. In 1948, 1949, and 1960, the Eagles also captured three NFL championships prior to the Super Bowl.
