The Super Bowl is the National Football League‘s (NFL) final playoff game each year to decide the league champion. Since 1966, it has taken the place of the NFL Championship Game as the season-ending game for each NFL season.

The match has been held on the second Sunday in February every year since 2022. Early to mid-January Sundays from 1967 to 1978, late January Sundays from 1979 to 2003, and the first Sunday of February from 2004 through 2021 were all used for previous Super Bowls. The Vince Lombardi Trophy, named after the head coach of the Green Bay Packers who won the first two Super Bowls, is given to winning teams.

The “Super Bowl” is frequently referred to as the “big game” or other generic phrases by non-sponsoring firms as a result of the NFL prohibiting the usage of its “Super Bowl” trademark. The day of the contest is frequently referred to as “Super Sunday” or “Super Bowl Sunday”.

The only teams that have won two Super Bowls without losing are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFC and the AFC’s Baltimore Ravens. The Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Detroit Lions of the NFC are the only four teams out of the 12 that haven’t won a Super Bowl that hasn’t played in it.

The Origin Of The Super Bowl.

After its establishment in 1920, the NFL successfully repelled a number of alternative leagues for 40 years. When the American Football League (AFL) was established in 1960, the NFL met its most significant rival. For players and spectators, the AFL competed with the NFL. The Rose Bowl Game in Pasadena, California began as the “Tournament East-West football game” as part of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses and was moved to the new Rose Bowl Stadium in 1923, is considered to be the first “bowl game.”

The stadium was named because it resembled the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut, and because the game played there was a part of the Tournament of Roses. The football match from the Tournament of Roses subsequently took the name Rose Bowl Game. Due to the success of the Rose Bowl Game, postseason collegiate football competitions were established for Miami (the Orange Bowl), New Orleans (the Sugar Bowl), El Paso (the Sun Bowl) in 1935, and Dallas (the Cotton Bowl) in 1937.

When the first Super Bowl was played, the name “bowl” for any significant American football game had already gained widespread use.

AFL commissioner Joe Foss invited the NFL to plan a “World Playoff” game between the two leagues’ champions commencing with the upcoming 1961 season on January 14, 1961, following the AFL’s first season. If the first World Playoff game had been held, it would have featured the Green Bay Packers vs. the Houston Oilers. This concept wasn’t realized for another dozen seasons.

The word “Super Bowl” was initially used to describe the AFL-NFL championship game at the merger discussions by Lamar Hunt, the owner of the AFL’s Kansas City Chiefs, in the middle of the 1960s. A vintage version of the Super Ball is on exhibit in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Hunt later claimed that the name came to him because his kids had been playing with one. Hunt stated, “I have kiddingly called it the ‘Super Bowl,’ which obviously can be improved upon,” in a letter dated July 25, 1966, to NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle.

The name “AFL-NFL Championship Game” was chosen by the organizations’ owners, but in July 1966, the Kansas City Star cited Hunt as saying, “the Super Bowl—my that’s a phrase for the championship game between the two leagues,” and the term quickly gained popularity.

The Associated Press reported that the “Super Bowl” “grew and grew and grew—to the point that there was Super Week, Super Sunday, Super Teams, Super Players, ad infinitum” despite the league’s assertion in 1967 that “not many people like it,” asking for suggestions and considering alternatives like “Merger Bowl” and “The Game.” With the third annual game, “Super Bowl” became a recognized term.

Since the fifth edition, in January 1971, the event has been designated by Roman numerals rather than the year it was played. The lone exception to this naming system history was Super Bowl 50, which took place on February 7, 2016, following the 2015 regular season. The following year, for Super Bowl LI, which took place after the 2016 regular season, the nomenclature switched back to Roman numerals.

Some team owners expressed concern about the merger’s viability after the Green Bay Packers of the NFL won the first two Super Bowls. When the AFL’s New York Jets overcame the widely favored NFL challenger Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III in Miami, the impression that AFL teams were not as competitive as their NFL counterparts shifted.

The final AFL-NFL World Championship Game played before the merger saw the AFL’s Kansas City Chiefs upset the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings 23-7 in Super Bowl IV, which took place in New Orleans a year later.

The NFL reconfigured in 1970, creating the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference, comprising the old American Football League teams and three NFL franchises (the Baltimore Colts, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Cleveland Browns) respectively (NFC). The Super Bowl would feature a match between the winners of the two conferences.

The winning team is awarded the Vince Lombardi Trophy, which bears the name of the Green Bay Packers’ head coach. Vince Lombardi led the Packers to their first two Super Bowl victories as well as five NFL titles prior to the merger in 1961, 1962, 1965, 1966, and 1967. Lombardi’s name was added to the trophy after his passing in September 1970. The Baltimore Colts received the first trophy given under the new name after winning Super Bowl V in Miami.

On the second Sunday in February, the Super Bowl is played. The weekend following Labor Day is when the current NFL schedule kicks off (the first Monday in September). An 18-week regular season begins that weekend and is followed by three weeks of playoff action and one week of the Pro Bowl.

The week following the Pro Bowl is when the Super Bowl is played. With Super Bowl LVI on February 13, 2022, being the first game to be played under this format, this schedule has been in place since an 18th week (and 17th regular season game) was added to the NFL schedule for the 2021 season.

From its establishment until 2002, the event was held in January. However, after the September 11 attacks, the week of games was postponed and rescheduled, extending the season by a week and moving Super Bowl XXXVI to February 3. Up until the 2021 season’s schedule expansion, when the event was moved to the second Sunday, the Super Bowl was set on the first Sunday in February starting with Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004.
