Mother’s Day is a holiday that celebrates maternity, maternal bonds, and the social importance of mothers. It can be celebrated by a family or an individual. Most frequently observed in the months of March or May, it is observed on various days throughout the world. Like Father’s Day, Siblings Day, and Grandparents’ Day, it complements comparable occasions celebrating family members.

When Anna Jarvis organized the first Mother’s Day worship and celebration at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, which now serves as the International Mother’s Day Shrine, the holiday’s modern American iteration was born. While some nations have celebrated mothers for centuries, the modern American version of the holiday only emerged in the early 20th century.

The numerous ancient traditions honoring mothers and motherhood, such as the Greek cult of Cybele, the goddess Rhea, the Roman festival of Hilaria, and other Christian ecclesiastical Mothering Sunday celebrations (associated with the image of Mother Church), are not directly related to it. Some people refer to her “Appeal to Womanhood throughout the World” from 1870 as the Mother’s Day Proclamation. However, the purpose of Howe’s Day was not to honor mothers, but rather to unite pacifist mothers against war.

There were numerous other attempts to create an American “Mother’s Day” in the 1880s and 1890s, but these failed to spread beyond the local level.

Mother’s Day continues to be one of the busiest days for flowers, greeting cards, and similar product sales in the United States. Mother’s Day is also the busiest holiday for long-distance calls. Carnations, colored if the mother is still alive and white if she has passed away, are used by many worshipers to mark the occasion.
