Publication History.

The Beatles song “Rocky Raccoon” served as inspiration for Bill Mantlo and Keith Giffen’s creation of the character. Other allusions to the song appeared in Rocket’s appearance in The Incredible Hulk #271 (May 1982), which was titled “Now Somewhere in the Black Holes of Sirius Major There Lived a Young Boy by the Name of Rocket Raccoon.” In this story, the Hulk assisted Rocket in stopping a villain from stealing “Gideon’s Bible,” which in the Marvel Universe was a book that contained all of the information on the Loonies colony.

Under the name “Rocky,” Rocket Raccoon made his comic book debut in Marvel Preview #7 (summer 1976), in the supporting role of “The Sword in the Star.” The Incredible Hulk #271 (May 1982), where it is revealed that “Rocky” is short for “Rocket,” would be his subsequent appearance.

In an afterword to the first issue of his four-issue limited series in 1985, Mantlo maintained that this was the same character from Preview, which was drawn by Mike Mignola and inked by Al Gordon and Al Milgrom.

Rocket first appears in 1990’s Quasar #15 and then in issues #44–#46 of 1992’s Sensational She-Hulk. Over the course of his first ten comic books, the character only made an appearance ten times.

After making a brief appearance in an Exiles issue from 2006, Rocket Raccoon was next featured in the 2007 limited series Annihilation: Conquest, its spin-off series Annihilation: Conquest – Star-Lord, and a new volume of Guardians of the Galaxy.

He continued to be a regular cast member up to issue #25 in 2010, when the book was cancelled. He later made an appearance in the sequel limited series The Thanos Imperative. Rocket appeared in supporting roles in Annihilators #1-4 (May 2011–August 2011) and Annihilators: Earthfall #1–4 alongside his fellow Guardian Groot (November 2011 – February 2012 ).

Avengers Assemble is a comic book series that serves as a starting point for fans of the movie The Avengers. Rocket Raccoon and the other Guardians members made appearances in issues #4 through issue 8 of the series. In Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3, which is a part of the 2012 Marvel NOW! relaunch, he plays a significant role.

It was revealed in February 2014 that Skottie Young would pen and draw an ongoing Rocket Raccoon comic. The first issue of the series, which debuted in July 2014, sold over 300,000 copies. Starting with issue #5, Jake Parker took over as the artist in place of Young. The series was one of many that were canceled for Marvel’s Secret Wars event and finished in May 2015. During the All-New, All-Different Marvel relaunch in January 2016, a new volume named Rocket Raccoon and Groot debuted.

Rocket’s Biography.

The so-called Galacian Wall isolates the Keystone Quadrant from the rest of the universe, and Rocket Raccoon serves as its “Guardian.”

Rocket is the starship Rack ‘n’ Ruin’s captain, and he and his first mate Wal Rus (a talking walrus) are from Halfworld, a planet in the Keystone Quadrant that was once home to a mental asylum. There, the animals there were genetically altered to have human-level intelligence and bipedal body construction, and many of them were trained to take care of the asylum’s residents. Rocket served as the colony’s top law enforcement official (or “ranger”) and defended it from numerous dangers.

Judson Jakes attempted to take the Halfworld Bible at one point, but Rocket and his numerous animal allies stopped him. Later, Jakes started the Toy War after Lord Dyvyne kidnapped Rocket’s buddy Lylla Otter. Rocket and Blackjack O’Hare joined forces as the Toy War went on, and Rocket was reunited with Lylla.

As soon as Judson Jakes and Lord Dyvyne joined forces to slay Rocket Raccoon, the Rack ‘n’ Ruin was demolished. Judson Jakes and Lord Dyvyne appeared to have been dead, but Rocket Raccoon and his companions managed to heal the Loonies of their mental afflictions. The robots, the animals, and Rocket departed Halfworld and headed into space for their own explorations. Later, it was discovered that Rocket had escaped incarceration on the Stranger’s planet while serving as a test subject there.

Guardians Of The Galaxy.

As a member of the group selected to accompany Star-Lord on his quest to prevent a Phalanx invasion of the Kree homeworld, Rocket Raccoon reappeared. Rocket is shown as a fierce, devoted, and astute military tactician with extraordinary talent. He appears to suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder, which is strongly implied. The iconic rocket skates from Rocket are not present.

At the request of his friend Star-Lord, Rocket joins the newest team of Guardians of the Galaxy. After hearing Major Victory utter it, he proposes that the team use that monicker. Later, when the team is on the verge of breaking apart and Star-Lord Peter Quill vanishes (after being transported into the Negative Zone by Ronan), Rocket saves the day and adds Groot as a member because they had grown close.

Rocket assumes command until they have rescued Peter and stopped an extraterrestrial assault. Rocket is in charge of the team’s effort to contact the Shi’ar when it seeks to put an end to the escalating War of Kings. They can’t teleport into the Emperor Vulcan’s flagship, so the Starjammers and Rocket’s former pal Ch’od must save them. The Shi’ar’s legitimate queen is brought back, much to Rocket’s horror, but she is killed after he leaves.

Rocket Raccoon joins Timely Inc. and starts working at a regular job after the Guardians split. When he and Groot were reunited, they were deceived into going back to Halfworld, where he discovered that most of his recollections of the location were made up lies. In reality, Doctor Dyvyne had been the Head of Psychology at Halfworld Asylum for the Criminally Insane, Jakes and Blackjack O’Hare had worked with Rocket to provide security, and the automaton clowns and anthropomorphic animals had been specifically designed to work at the asylum because their appearance would calm the patients.

The Star Thief, a psychic supervillain who had been admitted as a convict and used his psychic abilities to incite the residents against one another, had been responsible for the crises, Rocket vaguely recalled. Rocket intentionally altered his mind and left Halfworld to make it impossible to open; but, the Thief, whose mind had fled into the asylum after his host body died, fooled him into going back. Rocket had transformed the warders into a biological “key” to keep Star-Thief locked away.

The Guardians of the Galaxy take part in the incursion between Earth-616 and Earth-1610 in the first issue of “Secret Wars,” during which the Children of Tomorrow kill Rocket and Groot.

All-New, All-Different Marvel.

Rocket Raccoon takes over as the Guardians of the Galaxy’s captain as part of Marvel’s 2015–2019 “All-New, All-Different Marvel branding” while Star-Lord was occupied managing things on Spartax.

Rocket was one of the heroes unintentionally brought together to battle the ancient Greek goddess of darkness Nyx during the crisis in Avengers: No Road Home, when light itself was almost destroyed by her. Other heroes fighting Nyx included Hawkeye, Hercules, the Hulk, the Scarlet Witch, Spectrum, the Vision, Voyager, and Conan the Barbarian. Rocket thought that after Nyx was destroyed, he would be able to check “becoming an Avenger” off his bucket list.

Rocket’s Abilities.

With the exception of his enhanced speed through training, Rocket Raccoon has all the characteristics of an Earth raccoon, including keen senses of smell, sight, hearing, and touch. He can easily scale walls, structures, and trees thanks to his razor-sharp claws. In addition to being a skilled starship pilot, he is a smart engineer and technician, a master marksman with the two laser pistols he carries and has a penchant for heavy armaments. When Star-Lord is not available, he can lead the Guardians of the Galaxy because he is a skilled military tactician and commander.
