Tim Burton was tasked with directing the 1991 movie during pre-production, but he ultimately declined owing to schedule difficulties with Batman Returns, which led to Barry Sonnenfeld accepting the position. Illumination Entertainment bought the underlying rights to the Addams Family illustrations, it was revealed in March 2010.

Using the original illustrations by Charles Addams as inspiration, a stop-motion animated movie was originally intended. The movie was slated to have Burton co-write, co-produce, and potentially even direct. The movie was reportedly scrapped in July 2013, and according to Burton, this was because the studio preferred a computer-animated approach to the stop-motion technique.

In 2019, showrunners Miles Millar and Alfred Gough began creating story concepts. They then bought the intellectual property rights before drafting a pilot script that they then handed to Burton. When Burton saw the script, they were surprised to see how intrigued he was right away.
