Father’s Day was celebrated as a public holiday in Italy until 1977 and is now recognized as such in Lithuania and some regions of Spain. In Samoa, Estonia, and South Korea, where it is observed as Parents’ Day, it is a national holiday. The History Of Father’s Day

Early History

The Eastern Orthodox Church has honored Christ’s fleshly forebears by designating the second Sunday before Nativity as the Sunday of the Forefathers for centuries. This holiday might come between December 11 and December 17. Several prophets including Mary, the mother of Jesus, are honored during this feast.

It is known that Catholic Europe has observed Father’s Day on occasion since at least 1508. The feast day of Saint Joseph, who is revered as the benevolent Nutritor Domini (“Nourisher of the Lord”) in Catholicism and “the putative father of Jesus” in southern European tradition, is often observed on March 19. The Spanish and Portuguese brought this holiday to the Americas. From either the later years of the 14th century or the beginning of the 15th century, the Catholic Church actively fostered the tradition of honoring fatherhood on St. Joseph’s Day, which was reportedly started by the Franciscans.

Fatherhood is celebrated on St. Joseph’s Day in the Coptic Orthodox Church, but Copts celebrate it on July 20. The Coptic holiday might have originated in the fifth century.

Spelling

Following the example set by Mother’s Day, “Father’s Day” is written with a singular possessive. Anna Jarvis registered the term “Second Sunday in May, Mother’s Day, Anna Jarvis, Founder” as a trademark in 1912. Jarvis made it clear that the possessive form of “Mother’s” should “be a singular possessive, for each family to honor its own mother, not a plural possessive commemorating all mothers in the world.”
