LGBT is an acronym for “lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender.” The initialism, as well as some of its frequently used variations, has been in use since the 1990s and serves as a catch-all phrase for specific sexualities and gender identities.

Historical Background

The first word that was extensively used, homosexual, which is now mainly used in scientific contexts, has occasionally had negative implications in the United States. The term “gay” gained popularity in the 1970s.

The terms “gay and lesbian” became more prevalent as lesbians established more public identities. Some lesbian organizations, such as Daughters of Bilitis, which was founded by Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon but disbanded in 1970 due to disagreements over which goal should take precedence, were disbanded due to disagreements over whether the primary focus of their political aims should be feminism or gay rights.

In the United States, campaigners started using the initials LGBT in 1988. The movement did not treat gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people equally until the 1990s. Some organizations, such as the GLBT Historical Society, changed their names in 1999 as a result of this. Bisexual and transgender people in particular have occasionally been neglected by the greater LGBT community, despite the fact that the LGBT movement has faced much discussion surrounding universal acceptance of various member groups.

Although the word “LGBT” does not formally refer to everyone in smaller communities, it is usually understood to refer to people who are not expressly mentioned in the four-letter initialism.
