Stranger Things Recap: All Four Exciting Seasons Since 2016

The Duffer Brothers, who also act as showrunners and executive producers alongside Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen, are the creators of the American science fiction horror drama television series Stranger Things.

The first season of the show, which was created by Monkey Massacre Productions and Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment, was made available on Netflix on July 15, 2016. October 2017, July 2019, May, and July 2022 saw the release of its second, third, and fourth seasons, respectively. The show was picked up for a fifth and final season in February 2022.

Join us as we travel back in time to a small Indiana town where mysterious, dimension-hopping secrets abound as a group of children struggle mightily to get through childhood.

Stranger Things: Season One.

Salutations from Hawkins, Indiana! It’s 1983, a year of fantasy role-playing games, great movies, and Steven King novels. Young Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), who was playing Dungeons & Dragons with his buddies, was abducted off the street one night while walking home when he saw a weird creature.

Best friends Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) start looking for Will but instead find a mysterious girl with a shaved head who only goes as Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).

Will’s mother Joyce (Winona Ryder), who is pleading with the town police chief Jim Hopper (David Harbour) for assistance in finding her son, also starts to notice strange electrical disturbances in her house and sets up a set of Christmas lights inspired by a ouija board in an effort to contact her missing son. It works! He’s alive! However, where is he?

It appears that Hawkins is the epicenter of all kinds of craziness. Eleven unintentionally unlocked a doorway to a terrifying parallel world, which Mike and the crew quickly dubbed “Upside Down,” while participating in an experiment on psionically gifted children at a local lab. It is a gloomy reflection of the city, with strange tentacles and ash falling from skyscrapers and other notable structures.

The boys named the humanoid beast with a head full of fangs with the name Demogorgon after the main antagonist in their D&D games. Will has been brought there and is at the mercy of this monstrosity.

The search for Will also involves Will’s brother Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), Mike’s sister Nancy (Natalia Dyer), and Steve (Joe Keery), who is Steve’s lover and has fantastic hair. When these three isn’t consumed by their own teen drama, the Demogorgon, which kills Nancy’s best friend Barb (Shannon Purser), is haunting them.

Joyce and Hopper work together to launch their own rescue effort, facing Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine), who was in charge of the experiments, and eventually locate Will and bring him home.

In a makeshift sensory deprivation tank at Hawkins School, Mike, Dustin, and Lucas assist Eleven to increase her skills. However, when the agents from the sketchy lab storm the school and Eleven kills several of them, the Demogorgon is drawn to the killing. The monster pursues the children despite their attempts to flee, but Eleven challenges it and ultimately sacrifices herself in the process (or does she?).

The boys are once again playing D&D in Mike’s basement one month later. While they are glad to be together again, they are still grieving the loss of Eleven. In Hawkins, all is good. Will coughs up a strange black slug near the end of the season, at least for a few minutes.

Stranger Things: Season Two.

Now, in the fall of 1984, we are back in Hawkins after a quick detour to meet several other characters with abilities akin to Eleven’s when she eluded police in Pittsburgh (one of them had “008” tattooed on her wrist).

The fact that Dustin’s Dig Dug record at the neighborhood arcade has been beaten first causes our heroes the most concern. But soon it becomes clear that Will is still experiencing terrifying images of the Upside Down. That boy isn’t acting right. Will is taken to the lab by Joyce and Hopper to see if anyone there can help.

The lads meet Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink), a new student who has just moved to town with her stepbrother Billy (Dacre Montgomery), an alpha who is prepared to challenge cool kid Steve for the top spot in the school. Joyce is dating her former classmate Bob Newby (Sean Astin), who is her new love.

Barb’s family has been meeting with Nancy and Steve because they want to hire Murray Bauman (Brett Gelman), a private investigator, to find out what happened to Barbara. You’ll be happy to know that Eleven is still alive. She was only taken to the Upside Down by her confrontation with the Demogorgon at the conclusion of Season 1, from which she has since escaped and is currently hiding out with Hopper.

When Halloween arrives in Hawkins, our heroes dress into the Ghostbusters. When Lucas and Dustin attempt to include Max in their group, tension results. We also get to know Lucas’ sister Erica (Priah Ferguson).

When Hopper, a small-town police officer looking into rotting pumpkin patches, finds a tunnel connecting to the Upside Down and rapidly gets stuck, Will’s visions come in handy. The huge entity Will is witnessing is the Mind Flayer, which, as its name suggests, is not friendly. The tunnels reveal out to have been invaded by vines and tentacles from the Upside Down.

In the meantime, Eleven is enraged that Hopper is withholding information about her mother from her. As a result, she embarks on a psychic contact mission to find the girl we first encountered in Pittsburgh at the beginning of the season.

In a distinct, disappointing outlier of an episode with little connection to the main plot, cue telekinetic adventures and Eleven discovering a new love of eyeliner. Thankfully, Eleven quickly makes her way back to Hawkins to save her friends, who she feels are in peril.

Our heroes gather at Hawkins Lab, where we learn that the primary entrance to the Upside Down is situated, even if Will is still afflicted by some sort of Upside Down virus. Oh, and terrifying Demodogs, including one named Dart that Dustin had been fostering as a pet, show up and attack, killing poor Bob.

The Mind Flayer’s tunnels, which Steve and the children end up lighting on fire, Hopper’s cabin, where Nancy, Joyce, and the others ramp up the heat in an exorcism-style attempt to heal Will, and the lab, where Eleven shuts the dimensional gate, are all scenes of a final stand-off.

After a month, the lab will permanently close. The kids are at the school dance as the Hollands hold Barb’s funeral. Mike and Eleven kiss first, followed by Lucas and Max. Things are well in Hawkins. Aside from that, come on! The school in the Upside Down is home to a living, breathing replica of the enormous shadow monster.

Stranger Things: Season Three.

Summertime in Hawkins! And 1985 right now, which helps to explain why all the kids appear to be much older. To Hopper’s parents’ dismay, Mike and Eleven are currently making out, although everyone is actually enamored with the brand-new Starcourt Mall that recently opened close to the town.

Along with snarky, scene-stealing new character Robin (Maya Hawke), Steve, who was unsuccessful in getting into college, is working at the ice cream shop Scoops Ahoy while sporting a dashing sailor suit.

Dustin returns from summer camp where he claims to have found a girlfriend and introduces Cerebro, a new device he claims will enable him to communicate with the woman in question, Suzie (Gabriella Pizzolo), over radio.

He has little success with it, but he does occasionally get strange Russian transmissions. These take him, Robin, Steve, and Erica to a brand-new facility beneath the Starcourt Mall where the Soviets are attempting to open a new gate to the Inverse with a large, expensive device that keeps causing Joyce’s fridge magnets to come off.

Billy, who has gained notoriety among the local ladies as a result of his summer employment as a shirtless lifeguard, gets assaulted by vines and becomes possessed by the Mind Flayer, who is also responsible for the rats exploding all over the town.

When Nancy and Jonathan, who are now a couple, delve into the matter to get an exclusive for the neighborhood newspaper where they now work, they become involved in the rat problem.

Despite their disagreements regarding class, they find that Billy’s symptoms are shared by many other people. These individuals are more Mind Flayer victims who consume chemicals before transforming into fleshy, black masses and joining the Flayer itself. I suppose it’s not the best way to spend the summer.

Billy is imprisoned in a sauna by the kids to prove their suspicions that he is possessed (the Mind Flayer prefers the cold) before he and Eleven engage in a bloody confrontation. Now that everyone is aware of what’s going on, the group splits up: Joyce, Hopper, and Murray go to the lab to block the Russians and shut the gate, and the kids engage the Flayer in a titanic struggle at the Starcourt Mall.

When the Mind Flayer bites Eleven on the leg, she must use her talents to expel the portion of the creature left inside her, which causes her abilities to fail for the remainder of the battle. Billy, in his possessed state, takes Eleven to the Flayer so it can feast on her.

However, after Eleven uses memories of his mother to get through to him, he protects her and sacrifices himself, causing Max to experience extreme trauma. The kids give the Flayer everything they have while using fireworks to create an incredible visual spectacle.

Murray’s proficiency in Russian allows Joyce and Hopper to enter the lab undetected, while Dustin’s girlfriend Suzie saves the day by assisting them in breaking into a safe. Uncertain of their chances of survival, Joyce and Hopper ultimately resolve the developing love enmity between them and wistfully schedule a date for that Friday at Enzo’s at 7 p.m.

Joyce realizes she must destroy their dimension-splitting device as Hopper fights off the Russian guards, vaporizing everyone in the room in the process, including Hopper (or so she believes).

Eleven, Will, Jonathan, and Joyce say their final goodbyes before moving to California as the season comes to a climax with Mike and Eleven confessing their love. A Russian gulag is seen, and a prisoner from America is mentioned. Perhaps Hopper is still alive after all.

Stranger Things: Season Four.

The first storyline is set in Hawkins, where a number of teens are mysteriously dead. The Hawkins High School basketball team, led by Jason Carver, is searching for Eddie Munson, the leader of a Dungeons & Dragons group called the Hellfire Club, since they suspect him of utilizing demonic abilities to murder Chrissy Cunningham, Jason’s girlfriend.

During their investigation, Dustin, Max, Lucas, Erica, Nancy, Steve, Robin, and Eddie learned that the murders were committed by a powerful entity that resides in the Upside Down, whom they eventually named “Vecna.”

Mike pays a visit to Eleven, Will, and Jonathan in their new residence in California in the second storyline. While Mike, Will, Jonathan, and his friend Argyle try to find her, Eleven leaves with Dr. Martin Brenner and Sam Owens to a covert facility to help her regain her powers due to the events in Hawkins and the impending danger to her friends.

When they find that Hopper might still be alive and are instructed to bring money to make arrangements for his transfer, Joyce and Murray Bauman are the characters in the third narrative. Hopper is being detained in a Soviet prison camp in Kamchatka, where he and the other prisoners are made to fight a captured Demogorgon.
